Organic and Specialty Vegan Items!

Posted on: January 4th, 2011 by admin 7 Comments

I went shopping for my vegan meals for the week, and it was actually really easy for me, and enjoyable. I went to Roots Market first (a health food store where I live) first….I still haven’t been able to find tempeh ANYWHERE here. Let me know if you live in the midwest and where you get your tempeh from, I’m dying to try some!
This store is a vegan oasis for me. Half the the store is dedicated to microbrew beers and delicious wines…a bit pricey for everyday, but I would definitely buy alcohol from them for special occasions. There are organic cheese/milks for vegetarians as well. I also saw some vegan lipbalm by The Merry Hempsters which I will have check out soon. I’ll be able to try and review a bunch more vegan products as I won’t have to pay shipping to try them out!
These were the items I got from Roots this week:

Organic Brown Basmati Rice

Vegan Parmesan (I tried some on my pasta tonight, it was pretty good!)

Vegan Coconut Milk Creamer (I like to try non-soy vegan products, we will use this in our coffee this week)

Vegan “Cheddar Cheese” Slices (not bad at all, they definitely aren’t “cheese” but they do have the sensation of eating cheese)

Veganaise (I got this earlier this week and I’ve eaten it before. It is a vegan item I recommend to vegan skeptics…it tastes so creamy, and just like the real thing only MUCH healthier!)

These are salt free, and will help satisfy my snacky cravings without adding a ton of salt, oil, and fat to my diet. Very addictive, and I love the mellow sweetness of these.
Organic Red Lentils (I eat brown lentils on a regular basis; I thought these would add a change of pace and a different flavor…also, the bright orange is so pretty!)
I will be doing a separate blog post on the actual meals I’m making for the week, I was just really excited to share some of the vegan goodies I purchased with you all.

Omg I wish we got vegenaise here! There's a lot of stuff you guys have that we don't get. Sometimes it's a bit depressing flicking through my American cookbooks and knowing I won't be able to find some of the ingredients.

I love red lentils – I use them more than any other kind… in fact, probably the only ones I use in dried form (there's things I make with brown lentils but I usually just use canned… lol lazy). I love them in veggie soup in winter.

P.S. Crazy Rumors lip balms are vegan and sooo yum! I haven't bought anything from them for ages, so don't know if they've added many new flavours, but generally they have coffee and tea inspired stuff. Everything I've tried from them has smelled so yummy.

I either currently have or have used all of the above-mentioned products. Vegenaise is amazing – SO close to the real thing! I also love the galaxy foods grated "parm". I tried the coconut milk creamer, but I prefer the silk soy creamer in my coffee. I just generally like the taste of soy milk products more than almond, rice, coconut and hemp. I guess it's just a matter of what tastes good to you. I agree that crazy rumors has the BEST vegan lip balms ever – moisturizing and yummy!

yeah, I'm not a big fan of the coconut milk creamer:/ I think we are just going to get silk very vanilla soy milk and use that as a "creamer." I think it will work really well. I'm a soy fan as well, but I don't want to eat too much of it because of the estrogen issue. I'm not sure how I feel about the parmesan, maybe it will grow on me? I adore the Terra Chips. We've been loving the organic basmati rice this week…super yum! And we always love lentils, these were especially mild and delicious!

@Aimee…I do really want to try Crazy Rumours, but I haven't found it around here. Next time I make a Cherry Culture order I will.
